Everybody who talks about freelance writing talks about picking a niche. Some people don’t love the idea, but most people are huge fans.
Generally speaking, I’m a fan.
In short, picking a niche could change your life.
Well, your professional life. Which in turn could change your personal life and family.
Here’s the deal. It’s easy to get stuck when you’re new to freelancing. You know you’re supposed to do THIS and THAT and ALL THE THINGS… and there are just so many things to do (that you’ll never have time for) and so many choices to make (that you have no idea how to evaluate) and ultimately so many ways you can go WRONG.
It’s not a ton of fun, is it?
Picking a niche can change all of that.
Is picking a niche an absolute requirement for a beginning freelance writer?
No. Not even a little bit.
In fact, if you’re a total beginner and you have no idea WHAT you want to write about, you might get stuck on the niche-picking part. It’s true that there’s a lot of value in experimenting, taking what comes (as long as it pays enough), and seeing what you like and don’t like.
But then again… there’s that whole sea of overwhelm thing.
That’s where this niche challenge comes in.
When you know your niche, you know what to do (and what to avoid).
No more wondering how to get started. No more missing out on time with your kids so you can “figure things out” … or worse yet, no more wishing you could start freelancing but getting intimidated and quitting before you begin. (<— that is a real problem that happens to TONS of people, and I don’t want it to happen to you.)
Having a niche means you know where you belong… and more importantly, where you don’t belong. You know where to look, and you know what to pass up.
It gives you answers. Guidance. Direction. Confidence!
No more STUCK.
